From Western African Folk Dance to Today’s Hip-Hop
This program ties current popular dance trends to their cultural roots. Students receive an introduction to the basic steps and history of Western African folk dances, and learn to identify traditional elements in the dance moves of today’s hip-hop stars. Students then combine old and new styles to create their own folk-inspired modern choreography.
Recommended for grades 5 to 12
